WHAT A TRIP!!!!! WONDERFUL, AMAZING, INCREDIBLE, STRESSFUL (at times), DISAPPOINTING (at times) and UNFORGETTABLE!!!
I was definitely looking forward to this trip. I really wanted Maya and Noa to experience Africa and see animals in the wild. I was also hoping to see a rhino since I didn't see one on the Lake Victoria trip in 2007 and it's the only animal left I need to see of the Big 5!
We started the trip in Johannesburg. We rented a car and drove to Kruger National Park. We camped in the Skukuza camp. We had an already set up tent with 4 beds, a dresser, a fridge and a fan. It was a fun camping experience. At Kruger we did self-driving safaris, a guided sunrise safari and a guided sunset safari.
We saw so many animals:
Impala | Waterbuck | Springbok |
Wild dog | Hyena | Ostrich |
Vervet monkey | Babboon | Crocodile |
Warthog | Wildebeest | Zebra |
Giraffe | ||
3 of the "Big 5" - elephant, buffalo and lions | ||
Buffalo | Elephant | Lioness |
Lion |
After Kruger, we drove back to Johannesburg and flew to Cape Town. In Cape Town we saw and swam with penguins at Boulder's Beach, went kayaking, walked on beaches, went to the V&A Waterfront and played in the pool we had at the house we rented.
One day we decided to go to Table Mountain and take the cablecar to the top. We waited in a ridiculously long 3 hour line to get to the top. It was so hot and long. Once we got to the top, we walked around a bit and then waited in a 1 hour line to get back to the bottom. It was really, really, long, and not really worth the wait.
The big plan that we had made for Cape Town was for Maya and me to do a shark cage dive and see sharks. I booked the dive for the second day after we arrived in Cape Town, since we arrived at 10:30pm and I figured the first day we would be tired. Unfortunately, the tour operator cancelled the dive due to wind. I was disappointed, but Maya was REALLY disappointed. I rescheduled the dive, but because of the wind, no boats were going out. They said that the first day they'd be going out would be January 2 - the day we flew back to Johannesburg to fly home... Maya was soooooo mad. The one thing she wanted to do on this trip (and I wanted to do with her), was see sharks. So, after much consideration, I booked the shark dive for that morning since, if all was on time, we would have enough time to do the dive, come back to the house, pack up and go to the airport. Luckily, it all worked out!!! And, I'm so glad I did!!! Maya and I got to do the shark cage dive, what an incredible and unique experience. We saw a lot of Bronze Whaler Sharks. It was amazing!!! And, after the dive we even were able to shower after and got to the airport on time for our flight!
In the end, everything worked out and it was a wonderful South Africa trip!!!
